70 Years of Mister Softee
A quick history of how Mister Softee became the sound of summer — and how it found its way to your neighborhood.
1956 · PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA
The original swirl
Mister Softee was founded in Philadelphia in 1956 by brothers James and William Conway. After pitching the idea of selling ice cream out of a truck and being turned down by their bosses, the brothers set out on their own- building their first truck out of a garage in West Philly.
On St. Patrick's Day 1956, the first Mister Softee truck hit the streets, serving green soft serve ice cream.
